TOYOTA RACE CARS
Due to covid restrictions here over the last 4 months, the normal Toyota Gazoo Series hasn’t been able to race until the coming weeks.
So in the mean time a new 2 litre production series has started in Queensland, so we decided to race in that series as well to get more racing and seat time for our drivers.
We also added a second car to the Team and we ran both cars in the production series event, and we plan to run them both going forwards into the Toyota Gazoo series as well.
The 2 litre production series was run over just the first day, with 1 x qualifying session, 2 x 10 lap races and 1 x 20 lap race for the final. Both cars started well in qualifying before car #75 got held up and car #27 had engine dramas. Car #75 qualified in P5 and car #27 in P7.
Race 1 – Car #75 got a not so good start slipping back from 5th to 6th at the start before finishing back in 5th place; car #27 got solid start and battled hard with a hurt engine before coming home in 7th place.
After a long afternoon and in to the night repairing the damage the car was ready to go again for race 2. Race 2 we started out of P23, we got a bad start dropping to P29 by the first corner before recovering to finish P20.
Race 2 – Car #75 again didn’t get a great start dropping from 5th to 6th before driving really well and making a late last lap pass to finish 4th. Car #27 had a good start making up early places to climb into 6th place before engine issues continued to limit the power and coming home in 9th place as a result.
Race 3 the final – This race was fun, 20 lap race so was quite long; tyre management and strategy played a big part for all teams in this race. Car #27 battled hard the whole race but the engine issue just limited the power too much for the driver to make up positions, coming home in 9th place.
Ryan Hadden, the driver, drove amazing all day with way less power then the other cars; other drivers I don’t think would have even finished the race let alone come home in P9.
Car #75 – Alex Hadden, the driver, drove awesome in this race despite getting caught on the outside of turn 1 and dropping from 4th to 8th on the first lap; he was able to put his head down and drive back through the field making an unreal pass on the 2nd last lap to finish on the podium in 3rd place. Alex was at some points in the last 7 laps 1-1.2 seconds faster each lap then the rest of the field and if not for the bad start would have been right in the battle to win the race.
All in all it was a mix day for the team with 1 car on the podium and the other chasing an engine issue all day. But for both drivers it was a great debut race and both are excited for the next round, a lakeside raceway on the 14th November, where car #27’s engine will be repaired and ready to take home a podium finish along with car #75, before we head to the Bathurst 1000 for the final round of the Toyota Gazoo Series in early December.
