ECM Titanium Case History

In this new case history, the protagonist is a small hot hatch with a sporty heart. The 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, made entirely in aluminum alloy and dubbed with BMW-derived code B48A20O0, retains the inline 4-cylinder architecture but reaches a displacement of 1998 cc. This marks a significant evolution compared to the previous generation Mini John Cooper Works R56, which featured a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine capable of producing 211 hp and 260 Nm torque.

The new engine, in fact, delivers (in stock configuration) 231 hp and 320 Nm torque, representing a considerable leap forward not only in terms of power but especially in the management of torque, which is available starting at just 1,250 rpm. The perfect recipe for fun!

But the innovations don’t stop there. Thanks to the adoption of a twin-scroll turbocharging system, the engine drastically reduces turbo lag, ensuring smooth and immediate power delivery, making the driving experience even more engaging. Also, Valvetronic technology, which manages the variable valve timing, further optimizes engine efficiency, improving throttle response and reducing fuel consumption without sacrificing performance.

Compared to the previous 1.6-liter engine of the R56, the new unit not only offers superior power but also enhances driving dynamics, turning the penultimate generation Mini JCW into a true benchmark in its segment. It’s easy to imagine that with a dedicated calibration, the potential of this engine could be further enhanced, creating an even more high-performance and unique car.

What results were achieved?

To achieve fully satisfactory results on this Mini, equipped with Bosch MEVD17.2.3 ECU, precise work on the engine management parameters was required. Without any mechanical modifications, the remapping involved several areas of ECM Titanium Driver. The main adjustments were made to the following maps:

  • Turbo Pressure

Increasing the pressure of the twin-scroll turbo system allowed us to boost the amount of air reaching the engine, optimizing combustion. Careful modification of this parameter ensured better engine responsiveness, especially due to a greater boost demand from low RPM, which also benefited the reduction of turbo lag.

  • Wastegate

Managing the wastegate valve allowed us to keep the turbo pressure under control, reducing the risk of excessive pressure loss. This led to an increase in power without compromising engine durability or the stability of the turbocharging system.

  • Injection and AFR

Optimizing the air-fuel ratio management was crucial to ensuring more efficient and complete combustion. Adjusting the AFR improved fuel consumption while achieving a significant performance increase.

  • Torque Limiter

A key element for Bosch BMW/Mini ECUs is to modify the torque limiters to unlock the engine’s full potential. This enabled us to fully exploit the available torque and engine capabilities, ensuring greater acceleration and a more assertive response under load.

  • Speed Limiters

Intervention on the speed limiters allowed us to remove the electronic block at 250 km/h, fully utilizing the vehicle’s performance, even at high speeds.

  • Sport Display

To highlight the new performance achieved, we also updated the Sport Display integrated into the infotainment system. Now, the power and torque indicators have been scaled to faithfully represent the new values reached after tuning.

All these modifications resulted in a significant increase in both performance and driving pleasure, reaching power and torque values of:

278 hp – 410 Nm

It’s essential to consider that this car is equipped with manual transmission. Otherwise, the delivered torque would need to be electronically limited to ensure efficiency and reliability with the 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
