The global relaunch of the Alfa Romeo brand was spearheaded by the new Giulia. This car features a range of engine options, including the advanced 2.2 turbo diesel (Multijet II), a 2,143 cc four-cylinder engine delivering multiple performance levels in its stock configuration, ranging from 136 to 210 HP. Fully constructed from aluminum, it is remarkably lightweight and, when paired with the Giorgio platform, provides excellent balance for a smooth yet sporty driving experience.

Other noteworthy characteristics of this engine include higher thermal efficiency, offering a +10% increase in power compared to previous diesel engines, and an -8% reduction in fuel consumption.

On the Giulia, a mid-size sedan with a sporty character, this engine is one of the most popular choices, providing a practical option with reduced fuel consumption and a great balance between sportiness and driving pleasure.

Today’s Case History focuses on the least powerful version of this engine, which in its stock configuration on the Giulia delivers 136 HP and 450 Nm of torque. However, it’s important to note that despite its relatively low power, the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and the engine’s displacement compensate well, delivering a torque figure that stands out. For experts, this is a clear indicator that this engine’s performance levels are mostly managed electronically. Let’s explore how ECM Titanium contributes to unlocking its potential.

What results were achieved?

To achieve fully satisfying results without any mechanical modifications, precise adjustments were made to the engine management parameters, optimizing several maps within the Bosch EDC17C69 ECU Driver, including:

  • Rail Pressure

Increasing the rail pressure values optimizes fuel atomization. This improves combustion, translating into more power and better engine responsiveness during acceleration.

  • Turbo Pressure

Targeted adjustments to the turbocharger system’s pressure allow the engine to intake more air, enhancing combustion and boosting overall performance. For this engine, increasing turbo pressure—when managed correctly—is a key factor in achieving significant performance gains.

  • Injection Timing and Quantity

Adjusting injection timing and fuel quantity allows precise control over when the fuel enters the combustion chamber, optimizing the process. Advancing the injection timing increases power, but it’s essential to balance these parameters carefully to avoid mechanical stress that could affect engine longevity. Increasing the fuel quantity at specific operating ranges also plays a crucial role in raising torque and power.

  • Torque Limiter

Modifying the torque limiters unlocks the vehicle’s full potential, tailoring its performance to specific usage conditions. Additionally, these maps improve throttle pedal responsiveness, delivering a more dynamic and engaging driving experience.

  • Speed Limiters

Adjusting these maps removed the factory speed limiter set at 225 km/h, allowing the increased torque and power to further enhance the vehicle’s top speed.

After the recalibration, the car’s character was completely transformed, achieving impressive power and torque figures compared to its stock configuration:

228 hp – 520 Nm

These figures exceed the top-of-the-range diesel version, which delivers 210 hp and 470 Nm, without compromising the vehicle’s reliability in any way, indeed still considering some margin for improvement. In particular, on this vehicle equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it is possible to push torque beyond 500 Nm without mechanical issues and without compromising reliability. However, for models with a manual transmission, a more conservative calibration is recommended to prevent excessive strain on the gearbox.
